The renovation of the Museum of Cycladic Art has been completed
GDM Assets has successfully completed the first phase of the renovation and functional upgrade project at the Museum of Cycladic Art. This accomplishment, achieved within a tight project timeline, marks a significant milestone in one of the most challenging renovation projects undertaken in an operational building environment in Greece.
The first phase of the project includes extensive renovation work on the entrance, foyer, and vertical circulation cores. It involves interventions to the building’s exterior façade, structural reinforcements, and preparations for a full upgrade of the building’s accessibility and functionality. This project began in May 2025 and is being carried out in phases to ensure that the Museum, the Cycladic Café, and the Cycladic Shop can operate without interruption. This approach guarantees an optimal visitor experience while protecting the exhibited collections.
The external façade was redesigned through the installation of energy-efficient curtain wall systems, while the entrance was reconfigured with the creation of a new access point, the formation of a unified staircase along the building’s façade, and the installation of a single sliding glazing system that enables seamless interaction between the interior and exterior spaces. New functional areas were created, alongside extensive electromechanical interventions, including the implementation of Building Management Systems (BMS) that will enable advanced automation and operational efficiency.
Specialized construction solutions and dynamic project scheduling were implemented to minimize disruption for visitors and staff. As part of reorganizing vertical circulation, the staircases were fully renovated, and a new public elevator was installed, along with a dedicated lift for safely transporting loads and exhibits. A key milestone of the first phase was the installation of an innovative retractable accessibility lift, which was introduced for the first time in Greece. This strategic intervention aimed to transform the Museum into a dynamic and inclusive space accessible to all.
Marking a new chapter in its history, the Museum of Cycladic Art is redesigning its spaces to enhance the visitor experience as a dynamic, inclusive cultural destination, accessible to everyone. Upon completion of the project, the Museum of Cycladic Art will offer visitors new ways to engage with its collections. The renovation project encompasses both the exterior and interior of the Museum, reflecting its ongoing commitment to accessibility and sustainable development.
